Brightmoor Runway

Repurposing a portion of sidewalk where scores of schoolchildren board their school buses each day, the runway provides a surface for good fitness, the track brings a joyous, buoyant, well lit and well traveled surface to a residential street on which there are more vacancies than occupants, and where the local utility has failed to maintain street lighting , pedestrian signals, trash or snow removal.

By working together to design and install a public walkway that has implications for physical fitness, for public safety, and for inspiring the connection between creativity and community, the Runway augments Brightmoor’s current infrastructure on many levels:

-by facilitating running games and exercises that promote agility.

-by forging the connection between physical intelligence—from pre K through the varsity football player, from the 80 year old couple who has lived across the street since 1952 to perspective students and visitors—and design.

-by having multiple points of entry for neighborhood change and design.

-by opening the acts of design and creation of electronics, lighting and play to all ages through engaging the physical body, the mind and the hands.

Brightmoor Runway fosters a creative, and healthy future for local residents through inviting play, stimulating social opportunities, creative programs and hands-on programming while building a collectively designed public place to take care of together, to share together and to be proud of together.
